In honor of Bettie Page… Bettie Page was the first woman I ever saw actually enjoying being nude. Before her, female nudes were either ‘art’ in which the woman’s body was treated as an inanimate sculpture and her face obscured or ignored, or they were dark, seedy, very graphic images that depicted women in various degrees of fake sexual pleasure. Not until the miraculous Bettie Page came along could a woman happily romp around completely nude in the sunlight without a care in the world. It is that vision of women and their beauty that continues to inspire us at Body in Mind to this day – women in full gloriously happy possession of their faculties, their bodies, and their beauty. No one will ever do it better than Bettie, and like Marilyn Monroe and Anna Nicole Smith, there will never be another one. In the year and a half since Peta Todd last graced the pages of Body in Mind she has done a lot. She’s cycled 350 miles in 7 days, she’s jumped out of an airplane, she’s wing walked on a WW1 biplane – all for her favourite cause, Help for Heroes – she’s gone to Afghanistan to support the troops, and she even hosts a radio show. Soon she will tackle the Sahara Desert and perhaps even climb Kilimanjaro! “I’m very competitive!” Peta admits, never shying away from a challenge, no matter how big or how small. She convinced us of the truth in this on our latest trip to Las Vegas. At the wrap party we watched her eat more cheesecake than anyone else dared. And at the video shoot for 2009 A.D., Peta easily scaled huge boulders in a couple seconds while trained rock climbers were still fumbling with their equipment. Perfect beauty They say life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans. If you’ve ever worked as a photographer you know that beauty is what happens while you’re unpacking your camera or just setting up, or whenever you’re not quite ready to shoot. For example, this set was only a ‘warm-up’ while Chris got used to his brand new camera and Klaudia went on a romp through the garden right after a rain. And even though the shots are admittedly grainy and blurry and not at all technically perfect, they made us feel all summery inside – a welcome feeling after all the winter storms these last few weeks.
