In honor of Bettie Page… Bettie Page was the first woman I ever saw actually enjoying being nude. Before her, female nudes were either ‘art’ in which the woman’s body was treated as an inanimate sculpture and her face obscured or ignored, or they were dark, seedy, very graphic images that depicted women in various degrees of fake sexual pleasure. Not until the miraculous Bettie Page came along could a woman happily romp around completely nude in the sunlight without a care in the world. It is that vision of women and their beauty that continues to inspire us at Body in Mind to this day – women in full gloriously happy possession of their faculties, their bodies, and their beauty. No one will ever do it better than Bettie, and like Marilyn Monroe and Anna Nicole Smith, there will never be another one. Her death is a reason for great sadness, but her images are one of mankind’s greatest monuments to human freedom and happiness.
